Roll Avenue

Roll Avenue is a family-owned rolled ice cream and tea shop that I work for. It’s a very trendy and creative business.

During my time working at the shop, my experience has been nothing but enjoyable. Everyone is treated like family, which results in an environment that doesn’t feel like work. My goal is to give back to them.

Why Make a Website?

While running the register, I noticed that customers would either ask one of two questions:

“Do you have a to-go menu?”

“What are your hours?”

It’s obvious that customers like to know their options as well as what time to come to the shop. Previously, we didn’t have this information available online anywhere. I decided to solve this problem.

The Official Roll Avenue Website

To resolve this issue, I created the official Roll Avenue website using WordPress. The main information this website provides is:

  • Landing Page
  • Menus
  • Hours
  • About page

This website serves as a central hub for the business and answers the most frequently asked questions.

The Landing Page

After reviewing many similar websites, I came to the conclusion that giving the landing page a professional look would automatically set it apart from competitors. I gave it a simple, modern, and aesthetic look.

The primary goal of the landing page is to catch the user’s attention. This is why I took our best-looking items and presented them as featured items on the landing page. I directed all orders to GrubHub. Some photos accompanied with colorful copy resulted in a landing page that is sure to cause some major cravings.

Below the featured items, I included the store hours, an extremely important piece of information to have on the front page.

At the bottom, I added a positive customer testimonial which I got from the official Facebook page followed by a final call to action.

Menus

The menus are probably the most essential part of the website. Now, when people ask about to-go menus, employees can direct customers to the official site. What a relief!

About Page

At the top of the page, I included important information such as the address, phone number, and email.

When describing the company, I emphasized the family-owned aspect of the business. I used positive, welcoming, as well as some ice cream-themed copy with a call to action at the end to tie it all together.

What I Learned About Website Creation

The number one takeaway from this project was knowing the current objectives of your business. While there are countless features and types of information you can provide on a website, it’s counterproductive to fill your site with content that doesn’t help your business.

For example, I could have created a page to place orders through Doordash. However, after consulting my boss, we came to the conclusion that our shop doesn’t have the capabilities necessary to handle a large increase in customers at the moment.

Colorful copy goes a long way. Why would a customer pay extra for our rolled ice cream when they can get normal ice cream from the supermarket for a cheaper price? Our main selling point can’t be that we sell ice cream, but that we sell something trendy, novel, and delicious. This has to come out in the copy. By using colorful and creative writing, I can give customers the feeling that they are in for a treat.

An official website for Roll Avenue is a great way to provide information to potential customers. By continuing to build an online presence, it will solidify its spot as the go-to ice cream and tea shop in the city.
