Whether you’re an aspiring salesperson, marketer, or developer, getting your career off the ground is challenging. On top of these roles being highly sought after, the current tech layoffs don’t make it any easier.
During 2022, there were 1,535 layoffs at tech companies with 241,176 people impacted; during 2023 there were 751 layoffs at tech companies with 221,920 people impacted. How are people supposed to enter the industry in this climate?
Turns out, starting a career in tech in 2023 is entirely possible. Let’s take a look at a few ways you can give yourself an edge and land your first role.
The Golden Rule: There Are No Rules
That’s right. There are no rules.
To be clear, I’m not telling you to lie, cheat, steal, or do anything illegal to land a job. But many young professionals think they have to follow a traditional path to land their first role. This couldn’t be further from the truth.
Anyone telling you that you have to go to college, or that you have to apply to roles conventionally is flat-out wrong.
If you see an unorthodox path to your dream career, take it. At the very least, this will make you a prospect with unique qualities. And in many cases, this can make you stand out to hiring managers.
Finding Direction
What many recent high school graduates struggle with is deciding on a profession. This can be a big mistake.
Yes, you do need to have a general idea of where you want to go but you mustn’t waste time obsessing over which role is best for you.
Instead, use this time to make practical steps.
Add tech tools to your belt. Document everything you learn. Network with other people in the tech industry. Start posting regularly on social media.
As long as you’re constantly taking steps that are generally in the right direction, you’ll set yourself up for success.
Go Overboard
Of course, I’m being a bit hyperbolic but, given the current state of the tech industry, you have to understand the amount of competition you’re up against.
An entry-level job listing will get thousands of applications. How are you supposed to be the number one applicant?
Take it further than anyone else is willing to go.
Who says you can’t submit a video instead of a cover letter?
Who says you can’t obtain new certifications to better fit the role?
Who says you can’t contact the CEO directly and inquire about the role?
Who says you can’t connect with other employees via LinkedIn?
Do something that their HR team has never seen. This will automatically pique their interest and put you in the top 10% of applicants.

Yes, there are many other self-evident tips (Work hard! Be consistent! Set goals! etc.) but my goal is to give you unique insights that are relevant to the current climate in the tech industry.
